Doubling Cube Tips for Beginners

It is usually recommended to offer the doubling cube whenever you have to reason to believe that your opponent will refuse it, thus resigning of the game and forfeiting his/her initial stake. But how can you tell what is your backgammon game buddy up to? And when should you accept or refuse a double? Here are doubling cube tips for beginners that will assist you on making the proper cube decision at the right time.

When to Double?

  • Double when you are at least 8 points ahead in the race. Meaning, your pipcount is higher in 8 points or more than your opponent's pipcount.
  • Redouble if by adding 10% to your total pipcount, the result will show one pip difference to your advantage.
  • • Don't double if your opponent's board is in a better position than yours. In this case, you should play for the gammon.

Should you accept or should you refuse?

If you were offered to double by your backgammon opponent, take a look at the both sides of the board and try to estimate your winning chances. Also remember that some backgammon players are offering the cube to scare you away. In other words, they are bluffing, therefore you should evaluate both you and your opponent position before making the crucial cube decision.
  • If your opponent has a strong home board, i.e. he had made his 4-5 points without your anchors, while you have checker(s) vulnerable for hitting (or already hit) – you should resist the temptation to accept the doubling cube and.
  • If your opponent is ahead in the race (again, about 8 points or further) and only rolls of double 6s can reduce the difference - refuse the doubling cube. If the difference is smaller – accept the cube.
  • If you suspect that by accepting the cube you will lose the gammon or even the backgammon - refuse. Otherwise – accept.
