Hitting

Should I hit a blot?

The question above has the simplest and most straightforward answer in backgammon: yes. Hitting your opponent's blot whenever it is possible is a strategy commonly advised to backgammon beginners. Nevertheless, before landing on your opponent's checkers and moving it to the bar, take a look at these considerations:

Hitting vs. Making a Point

If you can choose between hitting a blot and making a point, you should always go for the former. That, unless you can make a key point such as the 5-point. Generally, hitting a blot is regarded as a wiser, long-term investment than making a new point, with the exception mentioned above.

Hitting Two Checkers

When possible, it is always advisable to hit two or more of your opponent's checkers. By hitting more than one of your checkers' opponents, you gain a higher pip count than your opponent, which puts you in a greater advantage comparing to your friend.

Position of the Opponent's Blot

Before hitting a blot, you should take into account the location of your opponent's checkers. The location would be in the farthest back of the board, as far as possible from your home board. Hitting your checkers' blot in this position decreases your chances of being hit. Additionally, it keeps your opponent in the far back of the board.

Strategy Considerations

Hitting a blot that resides on a strategically point on the board would be a great opportunity to gain a lead in the match. It would enable you to start building a block to hold back the opponent's checkers.
