Online Backgammon Tournaments

Online backgammon tournaments operate similarly to live backgammon tournaments accept they don't take place in backgammon clubs or casinos but in online backgammon websites. Online tournaments also involve large number of participants who are divided according to their skill levels. The prizes can range from trophies (in free online backgammon rooms such as yahoo backgammon) to cash or free entry to larger backgammon tournaments (in real money rooms such as play65).

Online backgammon tournaments formats are also similar to the live ones, but the terminology is a bit a different. Additionally, there are some tournaments formats unique to the online backgammon world.

Sit & Go Tournaments – whereby the number of participants is set, but the exact starting time is subject to the participants' registration – once the last participant registers, the tournament begins.

Knockout Tournaments – similar to the elimination format used in live backgammon tournaments. The knockout tournament is divided into several rounds, and after each round, half of the players are eliminated until only one player remains.

Swing Tournaments – at the beginning of this type of online backgammon tournament, all the players have an even amount of chips. When a player loses his entire stock of chips he is eliminated from the tournament and his opponent gets his chips.

Satellite Tournaments – a backgammon tournament whereby instead of a money prize, the winner or winners get a free entry to an event tournament (see below).

Event Tournaments – a large tournament with a fixed date and hour and unlimited number of entrants. In event tournaments, the more players register, the larger the prize pool is.

Rating Limited Tournaments – a type of tournament which is open only to players within a range of rating points.

Star Tournaments – online backgammon tournament in which players can pay the entry fees with their "stars" (points collected during regular matches).
